May 22, 2023 - Spring Sports Awards Luncheon

The Pigskin Club of Washington Spring Sports Awards Luncheon which took place on Saturday, May 20 brought together an array of the National Capital Region’s spring sports community to celebrate some of the best student athletes and coaches.  The Emcee, Christy Winter-Scott, basketball color analysis for ESPN and the Big Team Network’s women’s basketball presented this year’s awards.

Among the award winners honored at this event were:

  • Baseball Coach of the Year: Henry Martinez, Jackson-Reed High School
  • Boys Basketball Coach of the Year: Eric Singletary, Sidwell Friends
  • Girls Basketball Coach of the Year: Roderick Charles H. Flowers High School
  • Lacrosse Coach of the Year: Nicholas Worek, Riverside High School
  • Softball Coach of the Year: Diane Romo Thomas, St. John’s College High School
  • Coed Swimming Coach of the Year:  Torey Ortmayer, Yorktown High School
  • Tennis Coach of the Year: Charles Eric Samuel, Schools Without Walls
  • Collegiate Player of the Year: Jahmir Young, University of Maryland Basketball Player.
  • Howard University was named 2023 Collegiate Sports Program of the Year

Also honored was American University basketball star, screenwriter, film producer and CEO of OCTECT Productions, Chuck West who was presented with the 2023 Community Service Award for his commitment to education and community service.  Chuck teamed with the Duke Ellington School of the Arts to send students to Sierra Leone and Senegal so they could experience arts on the continent. He also established internships and classes to expose students to the theater.

Howard University was named the Pigskin Club of Washington 2023 Collegiate Program of the Year for championships won during the 2022-2023 academic year.

The luncheon concluded with the presentation of The Pigskin Club of Washington 2023 Scholarship Award presented by Chairman of the Board, Arthur I. Linder, Sr. to several of the high school athletes who achieved excellent GPA’s.

The proceeds from the luncheon will benefit The Pigskin Club of Washington Foundation Fund and support our youth mentoring activities.
